The Algarve is an ideal area to conduct R.Y.A. courses with 3000 hrs of sun each year, mild winters, predominately offshore moderate winds and a 3 metre tidal range. There are good harbours and marinas 4 or 5 hrs apart and superb anchorages. We are based in the new marina in Portimao which promises to be the best on the coast with great restaurants and a stunning beach. Courses join on Sunday and depart on Saturday and include breakfasts, lunches, tea, coffee, and three evening meals. All fuel and harbour dues but not flights and transfers. Morning full safety brief followed by sails rig etc. Afternoon out to set sails, tacking, gybeing, MOBs. Return to port in evening. Dinner onboard, Parma ham with melon, paella, choice of desert, cheese board, coffee, TUESDAY. Met. Passage planning. Marina boat handling, sail to Lagos Navigation and sailing exercises on route. WEDSNESDAY. Anchoring under sail and power, met. Pilotage into Alvor lead line, leading and back bearings , sail to next port. Exercises enroute Dinner onboard, Smoked salmon with egg mayonnaise, Lasagne with garlic bread and salad, choice of desert, cheese board, and coffee. THURSDAY. Tune up weak points. Engine procedures (impeller, bleeding etc.) sail to anchorage for dinner, onboard, seafood avocado, chicken piri-piri with seasonal vegetables, choice of desert, cheese board, coffee. Night port exit and entry. FRIDAY. Marina handling, alongsides on river pontoons and picking up bouys M.O.B.s under sail and power 1630hrs into marina square away flake sails Debriefs, meal ashore. IT IS POSSIBLE TO SAIL ON A RYA COURSE ON A CRUISE ONLY BASIS, IF YOU LIKE, SO YOU CAN DO YOUR COURSE AND YOUR PARTNER CAN COME FOR A CRUISE. THE COMPETENT CREW course is intended to take someone who has no sailing experience and take him or her to a level where they will be a useful crewmember of a yacht. On the course you will be instructed in the use and setting sails basic knots how to steer course safety equipment and its use and the techniques for living onboard. The courses are taken on board a yacht over a period of five days. THE DAY SKIPPER course is I aimed to take you from competent crew level to the stage where you can skipper a yacht in waters that you are familiar with light to moderate weather conditions. This course is in two parts first the theory course, which can be taken as a five-day shore based course taken in Portugal or the U.K. As a three weekend course in the U.K., as a night school course or by correspondence. It can also be taken onboard in conjunction with the practical course as a nine day course. The practical course is conducted onboard and will put what you have learned in theory into practice along with bringing you boat handling and sailing skills up to the required level. On successful completion completion of the course you will receive your Dayskipper certificate which will entitle you to a I.C.C. this will enable you to use a suitable vessel abroad. THE RYA MCA COASTAL SKIPPER practical course is for students who have already reached day skipper level and have the coastal skipper theory certificate,on this course you will be taught the skills to enable you to skipper a yacht by day or night and how to deal with heavy weather. on sucsessfull completion you will receve you coastal practical certificate and a debrief as to how close you are to being ready to take your MCA Coastal or Yachtmaster examination.
